We use paint in many different ways from decoration to hiding mistakes. As an easily accessible and affordable coating that can be chosen in many different colors and textures, paint is one of the most useful items to use in the different facets of home improvement.
A lot of the time the raw materials used to build a house or a piece of furniture can hold a beauty of their own. However, often a coat of paint over wood, metal, drywall, and other materials is used to add a sense of elegance or even just consistency. A fresh coat of paint on one interior wall, for example, can change the feeling of an entire room.
Use paint in situations where either the original material used is difficult to maintain and requires a coating as well as color, and also when older paint needs to be replaced. Stripping old paint before covering it with a new coat is always recommended, as is using a primer for painting certain materials.
Paint comes in different finishes:
- Flat paint – also known as matte paint. Little to no reflection.
- Satin paint – very slight reflection, excellent for interior painting.
- Eggshell paint – good for low-traffic areas since it is harder to clean.
- Semi gloss paint – reflective and moisture-resistant.
- High gloss paint – often used for trim and doors.
