America’s Most Iconic Japanese Supermarket is Coming to the Bay Area, And Locals Are Thrilled

Hashi Market, a New York-based Japanese supermarket, is set to open its first West Coast location in Cupertino. The store will be located at 20558 Stevens Creek Blvd., taking over the 20,900-square-foot space previously occupied by Sprouts Farmers Market, which closed in 2023.

Part supermarket, part department store, and part catering service, Hashi Market offers a variety of Japanese food products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, snacks, daily-prepared bento boxes, and sushi. The store is owned by Takayama International Inc., which launched its flagship location in New York City just two months ago.

While there is no confirmed opening date, Hashi Market’s expansion into the Bay Area is part of a growing trend of Asian supermarkets in the region. Other upcoming grocery stores include Mega Mart and H Mart in Dublin, Jagalchi in Daly City, Canada-based T&T Supermarket in San Jose, and Japan-based Tokyo Central in Emeryville. Tokyo Central already has a Cupertino location less than a mile away at 19750 Stevens Creek Blvd.

Ava Liu, head of operations for Hashi Market, stated that a store of this size would typically employ between 40 to 50 people. The company is also planning further expansion in California, with additional locations expected near San Jose and Irvine in Southern California.
