Paint Sprayer Features and Considerations

In addition to price, there are multiple factors to consider to ensure that you’re purchasing the optimal paint sprayer to fulfill your needs at the best value:

Paint Sprayer Types

Here are some of the different types of paint sprayers that are available.

Christmas Scroll Saw Template Packs for Sale

Airless Spray Guns

Airless spray guns are electric- or gas-powered machines that mechanically pump paint at high pressure into the sprayer, pushing it through the tip and atomizing it into a spray.

Due to the high pressure, spray guns fan out the droplets that evenly cover the surface. Airless spray guns handle thick paint better than standard compressed air or HVLP spray guns (see below). With the latter, you’ll need to add water to your paint to thin it down, using up to possibly 20% or 30% water.

Because airless spray guns tend to waste more paint than other types of spray guns, you’ll need to appropriately estimate the amount of paint you’ll require for the job and purchase extra paint to account for any waste.

Standard Spray Guns

A standard spray gun uses highly pressured, compressed air via a compressor to atomize paint into a controlled pattern. The high pressure leads to a fine, atomized mist that aggressively blasts the paint finish onto a surface, resulting in smooth, even coverage. The main advantage of conventional air paint spray guns is their versatility.

Unfortunately, again, the result is wasted paint. Approximately 70% or so will simply spray into the air rather than onto your intended surface. Not only can this become expensive, but it can also be harmful to the environment.  Additionally, these models produce high air emissions and can be extremely loud.

HVLP Spray Guns

HVLP spray guns use high volumes of air to propel your paint at relatively low pressures. Using low-pressure levels helps you easily determine where the paint will spray, decreasing the amount of paint that bounces off intended surfaces. Because these spray guns use low pressure, you’ll be able to stand closer to the surface of what you’re painting.

HVLP spray guns may use either a turbine system or an air compressor.

  • HVLP paint sprayers that use a turbine system create high volumes of air, yet with lower pressure at approximately six pounds per square inch. Although units with turbine systems tend to be more expensive, they’re also more efficient. Since you won’t have to buy an air compressor, in the long run, going with an HVLP turbine spray gun may be the best financial choice.
  • HVLP spray guns that use an air compressor can produce approximately 25 pounds of pressure per square inch while propelling the paint. While that may sound like a benefit, it comes with a price. Although HVLP spray guns with air compressors are effective, many feel that they’re simply not as efficient as they should be.

How to Choose a Paint Sprayer Tip

Your sprayer tip choice gives you control over the width and coating depth of your paint. Consider whether you’ll be doing a precision paint job or trying to rapidly cover a large surface area.

Christmas Scroll Saw Template Packs for Sale

An important tip (pun intended): Never use rusted or overused tips. Instead, replace them immediately.

You can tell that a tip is becoming worn when the paint’s fan size begins to decrease. The tip’s soft edge will also become more defined. Your spray pattern will begin to become uneven, and you’ll end up using more paint to cover the same surface area. So if you decide to stick with an overused tip, you’ll be losing time and money, and you’ll obtain inferior results.

Size Matters

A sprayer’s tip size may refer to the size of the tip’s opening or, in some cases, both the fan’s size in inches and the size of the tip’s opening.

For example, a 515 tip is going to spray paint in a 5-inch diameter out of the tip’s orifice, which measures .015 inches. The larger the tip’s orifice, the greater the amount of paint you can apply using the same hand speed and pressure.

Spray Pattern

Paint sprayers also have different spray patterns or shapes in which they project the paint. Many consider the best paint sprayers to be highly flexible, spraying in horizontal, vertical, and round patterns.

Newly painted chairs

This gives you the ability to switch from spraying a wide fan across your surface to achieving the same width while moving up and down.

All paint sprayer tips are available in multiple spray-pattern widths. They range from six to 14 inches. If you’re painting large surface areas, opt for a larger spray-pattern width. For smaller surfaces, choose a small spray-pattern width.

Consider the Paint Job in Question

Think about the nature of your painting project. When considering your options, check the manufacturer’s instructions. They should provide guidelines regarding the optimal recommended tip size for their product’s viscosity. Heavy paints and coatings will require more significant pressure and larger tip sizes, while stains will require smaller tip sizes and less pressure.

Christmas Scroll Saw Template Packs for Sale

Also, consider what capacity will be most appropriate for your sprayer. How often will you need to refill the paint for each project? If you suspect you’ll constantly be refilling the paint for certain jobs, consider purchasing a paint sprayer that draws directly from the paint can or has a large hopper.

Wheels

If you’re going to need to carry your paint over long distances, consider selecting a paint sprayer unit that comes with wheels. Also, purchase a sprayer with a long extension cord or a flexible hose that extends the necessary length for your project.

Ensuring Proper Thinning

Regardless of the paint sprayer you use, most machines won’t perform well and will clog easily if you don’t properly thin specific paint types. Fortunately, most units come with a viscosity cup to help determine how much you should thin your paint based on fluid flow resistance and thickness.

When you introduce fluid into the viscosity cup, record how long it takes for the fluid to empty through the cup’s hole. The more quickly the fluid drains, the thinner it is. Knowing your paint’s viscosity provides a reference range, helping you to select your unit’s settings for consistently positive results. You can use water or a bit of latex conditioner to thin your paint.

Conclusion

We hope this article has helped you determine which factors are essential when you’re ready to purchase a spray gun to help beautify your home inside and out. Remember to consider your specific needs and objectives and know that there’s an optimal, high-value, low-cost paint sprayer out there for you.
